Soccer great George Best was arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting a woman who feared he was about to attack his former girlfriend.

He was questioned and arrested on allegations by Vicky Pope, who accused him of attacking her outside a house in Ewell, south of London.
She told the Daily Mirror that Best punched her in the neck outside the home of her friend Gina Devivo, one of the soccer star's former girlfriends. Pope claimed Best appeared drunk and said she wanted to protect Devivo.
Phil Hughes, Best's agent, said the former Man U. star "categorically" denied he had punched Pope. There possibly has been some exchange and some jostling, I don't know," Hughes said.
